Heart and Soul

Kids will feel closer to history than ever before as they follow the experiences of an unnamed narrator, whose ancestors arrived here as slaves. This “Everywoman” puts a human face on the injustices that people of color have faced throughout American history. She’s on the scene for the dramatic events that changed the nation forever—from the Emancipation Proclamation to the Civil Rights Movement to the election of President Obama—and the smaller, yet no less meaningful, triumphs along the way. Ages 9-12.

Power & Beauty

Drawing upon his experiences as a young drug dealer on the streets of Atlanta, acclaimed hip-hop artist T.I. makes his debut with a powerful, modern novel. Both 16, Power and Beauty are sexually drawn to each other, but must keep their attraction hidden, especially from their new guardian, Slim, a rich hustler who has his own plans for them. As Slim takes Power under his wing and introduces him to the dark side of Atlanta, he also tries to corrupt Beauty’s independence and innocence. Eventually driven apart, the teens’ lives take very different paths. Yet neither Power nor Beauty can forget their love, and one day, one of them will have to save the other in this dark, gritty story of sex, violence, hustling and redemption.

Silenced

When I first began writing Silenced, I had just entered parenthood and quickly realized that my mother, who had first become a parent when she was fifteen, had made a lot of sacrifices for her seven children. She actually raised us alone for some time. But my mother went from being a high school drop out to holding a Master’s Degree in the study of Social Work. Her drive continues to motivate me, especially since we have come from so far.

I channeled those memories along with the many different changes I saw happening to my hometown of Washington, D.C. in recent years, with a lot of single mothers struggling to keep their families together. Their voices and others from my adolescence spoke to me, just as their sense of community did.

In Silenced, a mother-daughter relationship is strained as Nicola pushes her daughter, Tinka, to dream beyond the limits of their poor neighborhood, even if her only daughter can’t imagine it for herself. Like Nicola, my mother made sure I was prepared to make it on my own, if necessary. From this tale, I hope readers get an awareness of the resilient spirit of those who struggle—against poverty, crime, homelessness, depression and ignorance
